How to Prepare for a Boudoir Shoot: A Complete Guide

Preparing for a boudoir shoot can feel exciting, empowering, and—yes—a little nerve‑wracking. Whether this is your first boudoir session or you’re returning for another confidence‑boosting experience, thoughtful preparation helps you feel relaxed, radiant, and fully present on shoot day.

This guide walks you through exactly how to prepare for a boudoir shoot—from mindset and wardrobe to skincare, hair, and what to expect in the studio—so you can show up feeling confident and beautiful.

What Is a Boudoir Shoot?

A boudoir shoot is a professional photography session designed to celebrate your confidence, beauty, and individuality. Sessions can be soft and romantic, bold and editorial, dark and moody, or playful and light—there is no single “right” way to do boudoir.

At Sweet Confidence Boudoir, my sessions are customized to you, guiding you along this self love experience, and designed to meet you exactly where you are—no modeling experience required. Utah and the Salt Lake City area have so many studios, Airbnb's, and hotels, that can capture your vision. Wherever you are, we can find you a perfect location indoor or outdoor that will help show the beauty that you already have.

1. Prepare Your Mindset First

The most important part of preparing for a boudoir shoot isn’t physical—it’s mental.

Let Go of Perfection

You do not need to change your body, lose weight, or look like anyone else. Boudoir is about capturing you, exactly as you are right now.

Trust the Process

As a Professional boudoir photographer, I will guide you through posing, and movements the entire time, while giving you space to explore your sensuality in new or old and forgotten ways.

Boudoir mean dressing room photos AKA a place where you can be yourself and don't need to preform for anyone. It's fun!!

For instance have you ever been in a vibey dressing room with the perfect music and then found a piece that you totally rocked so you can help but dance it out... That's the vibe of boudoir put simply.

Set an Intention

Ask yourself why you’re doing this session:

  • To celebrate a milestone
  • To reconnecting and accepting yourself
  • As a gift for a partner
  • Simply because you deserve it

Holding that intention helps ground you and calm nerves leading up to shoot day. Also just knowing the nerves are totally normal and the anticipation is the worst part, can help calm your mind.

You being brave and vulnerable is a big step in a positive direction, and what my mom told me, "you only regret the things you don't do in life"! You got this babe -- you can always call or text me anytime. I will give you pep talks anytime you need!

2. Choose the Right Outfits for Your Boudoir Session

Your wardrobe sets the tone for your photos, but it doesn’t need to be complicated. I have a client closet with many options and styles, let me know if your interested and we can get you set up. (Sizing may be limited to custom sizes, my client closet has items to fit bodies sized xxs-xxxxl) Never fear! The great thing about boudoir... you don't need any clothes for the photos to look fantastic! 😉

What to Bring

  • 2–4 outfits total depending on your boudoir package
  • Lingerie sets or outfits that you feel confident in (Don't forget to cut off the tags!)
  • Optional accessories: heels, jewelry, thigh‑highs
  • Any sentimental/personal props or stylized props you want to bring
  • An accepting heart

Fit Matters More Than Size

Choose pieces that fit comfortably. If something digs in, rides up, or needs constant adjusting, it will show in your body language. However a little riding up the booty and spilling over can be sexy, as long as you feel comfortable and confident that is the key!

Neutral Colors Photograph Beautifully

Black, white, cream, green, and deep jewel tones tend to photograph best and stay timeless.

That said, bold colors like black and red are undeniably sexy and can bring a spark, confidence, and intensity to your images. We can even match the style and color of your fits to match the vibe of the over all aesthetic. We customize your session to you

Black is powerful and sculpting, creating a classic, confident feel, while red adds drama, passion, and a sense of fearless femininity. If slipping into a darker or bolder color makes you feel energized, daring, or more like yourself, that confidence will translate beautifully on camera. The most flattering color is always the one that makes you feel incredible. What is most important is that you feel empowered and beautiful. Choose the color that screams you!!

3. Hair, Makeup, and Grooming Tips

Hair & Makeup

Most clients opt for professional hair and makeup, which:

  • Reduces stress
  • Helps your features photograph beautifully
  • Allows you to relax before your shoot

If doing your own makeup, aim for a slightly more polished look than everyday wear. I offer make-up in my higher tiered packages, we can get this arranged and take that stressful element off your mind!

Grooming Timeline

  • 1–2 days before: Shave or wax
  • 2–3 days before: Any facials or exfoliation
  • Night before: Moisturize

Avoid trying anything new the week of your session.

4. What to Eat & Drink Before Your Boudoir Shoot

The Day Before

  • Drink plenty of water
  • Eat balanced meals (lots of dark leafy greens for extra glow)
  • Avoid excess alcohol and greasy/salty foods

The Day Of

  • Guzzle that water baby!
  • Eat a protein‑rich meal
  • Bring water or a small snack

Skipping food can make you feel lightheaded and tense—fuel your body.

5. What to Expect on Shoot Day

Knowing what to expect helps ease nerves.

When You Arrive

  • I will welcome you in
  • We will set out your outfits to catch the vibe
  • Music and conversation to help you relax
  • Outfit selection
  • Mini guided stretch + breathing exercise

During the Shoot

  • Visually and verbally guided posing with space for you to explore new sides to yourself
  • You get to have a say the entire time to ensure your comfort is being met
  • Here to help with adjustments and wardrobe if wanted
  • I show you my back of camera to make sure you are liking the photos you are capturing along the way
  • Constant encouragement!! I am you biggest cheerleader!

Most clients start nervous and after 5-10 minutes forget that they are half naked in front of a stranger and we are having the time of our lives jamming out to music and feeling empowered. This is one of my favorite parts about Boudoir photography, that moment when the client gets that sparkle in her eyes. The feeling of confidence and self acceptance and love is so powerful its almost tangible! It's the most beautiful and spectacular feeling, that is why I always say boudoir is addicting. :)

6. Common Boudoir Prep Mistakes to Avoid

  • Self tanner -- It's really hard to edit and make look natural
  • Not stretching or drinking/eating -- prepare your body
  • Wearing tight clothing before the shoot (can leave marks)
  • Comparing yourself to others
  • Overthinking every detail or become over critical of yourself
  • Not sleeping the night before

Your job is simply to show up. Everything else is handled for you.

7. Why Boudoir Is for Every Body

Boudoir photography is inclusive, affirming, and deeply personal. It is not reserved for a certain age, shape, shade or life stage.

Many clients say their session helped them:

  • Reclaim confidence
  • See themselves differently
  • Feel empowered long after the photos were taken
